Bios of the Board of Trustees of the Endowment Fund, 2017 – 2018

Jimmy D. Clark, Chair | Greensboro, NC:  Chair of the NC State University Board of Trustees.  Owner and President of Guy M. Turner, Inc. Former Chair of the NC State Board of Visitors. Former member of the NC State Engineering Foundation Board, Dean’s Circle, Student Aid Association Board, and Alumni Association Board. He has served on the Park Scholarships Selection Committee. Member of the Peele Giving Society. B.S. in Civil Engineering from NC State and registered Professional Engineer.

 

Susan P. Ward, Vice Chair | Raleigh, NC:  Retired freelance artist and philanthropist. Former president of NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Foundation Board. Served as Vice President of ARTS NC State and Chair of the Development Committee for NCSU Friends of the Gallery. Developed a number of scholarships across disciplines of NC State. Recipient of the Watauga Medal, Menscer Cup, the Dean’s Award from the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Bowers Medal of Arts and the Wings on Wings Award from the College of Design. Member of the Peele Giving Society. Received a B.F.A from Western Carolina University.

W. Randolph “Randy” Woodson, Chancellor:  Dr. Randy Woodson, the 14th chancellor of North Carolina State University, is a nationally recognized scholar and academic leader who oversees the largest university in North Carolina with more than 34,000 students and a budget of $1.4 billion.

Larry Barbour | Raleigh, NC:  President and CEO of North State Bancorp and North State Bank.  More than 35 years of experience in banking, serving as Chairman of the N.C. Bankers Association in 2010 and 2011.  Previously served on the board of directors of the John Rex Endowment Foundation, the WakeMed Hospital System, Hospice of Wake County and the NC State Alumni Association.  Recognized as a North Carolina State University Distinguished Alumnus (1997).  Graduated from NC State in 1971 with a B.A. in Political Science.


Lawrence Davenport | Greenville, NC:  Retired President, JP Davenport and Son, Inc. Vice-President, Davenport Farms.  Currently serves on the Board of Directors of Golden LEAF Inc., Vidant Health, The Little Bank and the Tobacco Growers Association of N.C.  Founding member of the N.C. State University Board of Visitors, a recipient of the NC State’s Watauga Medal, CALS Distinguished Alumnus 2001, and a member of the Chancellor’s Circle. Previously served as president of the N.C. Crop Improvement Association and the N.C. Foundation Seed Producers. Member of the U.S. Advisory Commission for Tobacco Inspection. Graduated from NC State in 1965 with a B.S. in Crop Science.


Benjamin P. Jenkins | Charlotte, NC: The former vice chairman and president of the General Banking Group of Wachovia Corporation, Mr. Jenkins is a member of the Capital One Financial Corporation Board of Directors; is an advisory partner with Fennebresque and Company; is a former managing director and vice chairman for retail banking for Morgan Stanley; and has held leadership positions with First Union banks. In addition to his financial generosity and service as a trustee, Mr. Jenkins has served on the Board of Visitors; as a member of the Graduate School Advisory Board; as honorary chair of the 4-H Gala; and as a member of the PCOM Dean Nomination Committee. Mr. Jenkins, honored as the College of Management Person of the Year in 2008, has volunteered as a judge for the college’s student showcase program. Ben Jenkins is a driving force behind the success of Poole College of Management and Jenkins Graduate School of Management.  He is a lifetime member of the Friends of the Library, a member of the Alumni Association and a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

Ben Jenkins earned his bachelor’s degree in textile chemistry from the university in 1968 and his MBA from the University of Alabama in 1971.


Gayle Lanier | Raleigh, NC:  Senior Vice President – Customer Services at Duke Energy.  Currently serves on the board of directors of the United Way of the Greater Triangle.  Served on NC State University National Minority Engineering Programs Advisory Board. Named a Distinguished Alumna by the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 2007.  Served on NC State University Board of Trustees from 2007 until 2012.  Graduated from NC State in 1982 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering.


Arthur “Art” Raymond, Jr. | Raleigh, NC:  Retired as Senior Vice President of Hooker Furniture Company in 2013. President of A.G. Raymond & Company, consulting firm serving the furniture industry, from 1980 through 2010. Previously the chair of the NC State Natural Resources Foundation Board of Directors. Adjunct Professor in the College of Natural Resources, and guest lecturer in Industrial Engineering. CNR Alumnus of the year in 2015. Active member of the NC State Alumni Association and the Wolfpack Club. Member of Lonnie Poole Golf Club Advisory Committee. Member of Sigma Nu fraternity. Graduated from NC State’s College of Natural Resources in 1969 with a B.S. in Wood Science and Technology.


James “Jim” Owens | Peoria Heights, IL:  Former Chair of the NC State University Board of Trustees.  Former Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar Inc. Currently serves on the Board of Directors of Alcoa, IBM and Morgan Stanley. Recipient of NC State’s Watauga Medal, Poole College of Management’s Alumnus of the Year 1999 and Person of the Year 2009, a lifetime member of the NC State Alumni Association and member of the Peele Giving Society.  B.S. and Master’s degrees in Textile Technology, Ph.D. in Economics from NC State.
