Bios of the Board of Trustees of the Endowment Fund, 2020-2021

Thomas E. Cabaniss, Chair | Richmond, VA:  Chair of the NC State University Board of Trustees.  Thomas Cabaniss formerly served as a managing partner of McGuireWoods LLP for eleven years. He was also the President of the NC State Alumni Association and is an Honorary Lifetime member. Tom previously was on the NC State University Foundation Board of Directors and is the founding member of the State Club Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Peele Giving Society. Tom graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from NC State in 1972, and a J.D. from University of Virginia in 1975.


Robert “Chip” Andrews, Vice Chair | Raleigh, NC:  Former Chairman and CEO of FMI Corporation. Member of Poole College of Management’s Advisory Board and formerly served on the Board of Visitors, as chair of the Graduate School Board of Advisors, as founding member and president of the Gallery of Art & Design, as chair of Friends of the Gregg Museum and as a volunteer leader for the Campaign for NC State Students. Member of the Dabney Giving Society. BA in Economics from NC State.

W. Randolph “Randy” Woodson, Chancellor:  Dr. Randy Woodson, the 14th chancellor of North Carolina State University, is a nationally recognized scholar and academic leader who oversees the largest university in North Carolina with more than 34,000 students and a budget of $1.4 billion.

Larry Barbour | Raleigh, NC:  President and CEO of North State Bancorp and North State Bank.  More than 35 years of experience in banking, serving as Chairman of the N.C. Bankers Association in 2010 and 2011.  Previously served on the board of directors of the John Rex Endowment Foundation, the WakeMed Hospital System, Hospice of Wake County, the NC State Alumni Association (Past President), the NC State University Foundation, and the NC State University Board of Visitors.  Recognized as a North Carolina State University Distinguished Alumnus (1997).  Graduated from NC State in 1971 with a B.A. in Political Science.

Susan P. Ward | Raleigh, NC:

Benjamin P. Jenkins | Charlotte, NC: The former Vice Chairman and President of the General Banking Group of Wachovia Corporation, Mr. Jenkins is a member of the Capital One Financial Corporation Board of Directors; is an advisory partner with Fennebresque and Company; is a former managing director and vice chairman for retail banking for Morgan Stanley; and has held leadership positions with First Union banks. In addition to his financial generosity and service as a trustee, Mr. Jenkins has served on the Board of Visitors; as a member of the Graduate School Advisory Board; as honorary chair of the 4-H Gala; and as a member of the PCOM Dean Nomination Committee. Mr. Jenkins, honored as the College of Management Person of the Year in 2008, has volunteered as a judge for the college’s student showcase program. Ben Jenkins is a driving force behind the success of Poole College of Management and Jenkins Graduate School of Management.  He is a lifetime member of the Friends of the Library, a member of the Alumni Association and a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

Ben Jenkins earned his bachelor’s degree in textile chemistry from the university in 1968 and his MBA from the University of Alabama in 1971.

Gayle Lanier | Raleigh, NC:  The former Senior Vice President – Customer Services at Duke Energy. Currently serves on the board of directors of the United Way of the Greater Triangle.  Served on NC State University National Minority Engineering Programs Advisory Board. Named a Distinguished Alumna by the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 2007.  Served on NC State University Board of Trustees from 2007 until 2012.  Graduated from NC State in 1982 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering.

Arthur “Art” Raymond, Jr. | Raleigh, NC:  Retired in 2013 as Senior Vice President of Hooker Furniture Corporation responsible for global operations including sourcing, quality, logistics, and distribution.  From 1980 through 2009 he was President of A.G. Raymond & Company, a consulting firm advising furniture manufacturing clients around the world.  Mr. Raymond will complete his first term on The Board of Trustees of the Endowment Fund of North Carolina State University on June 30, 2019, and serves as one of the Endowment Fund Representatives to the NC State Investment Fund Members Board.  He served for 12 years as a Director and the Chairman of the NC State Natural Resources Foundation Board and participated as Past Chairman in the sale of the Hofmann Forest timber deed.  In addition, he served two years on the Park Scholars Selection Committee. He has also been an Adjunct Professor in the College of Natural Resources and a guest lecturer in Industrial Engineering.  He was the CNR Alumnus of the year in 2015. He is a member of the NC State Alumni Association and the Wolfpack Club as well as a charter partner of the Lonnie Poole Golf Club and member of its Advisory Committee.  Graduated from NC State College of Natural Resources in 1969 with a B.S. in Wood Science and Technology. Member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

James “Jim” Owens | Peoria Heights, IL:  Former Chair of the NC State University Board of Trustees.  Former Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar Inc. Currently serves on the Board of Directors of Alcoa, IBM and Morgan Stanley. Recipient of NC State’s Watauga Medal, Poole College of Management’s Alumnus of the Year 1999 and Person of the Year 2009, a lifetime member of the NC State Alumni Association and member of the Peele Giving Society.  B.S. and Master’s degrees in Textile Technology, Ph.D. in Economics from NC State.
